Dare County reports 19th COVID-19 death, the fourth within a month

Dare County Health and Human Services on Wednesday reported a 19th COVID-19 death on its daily pandemic dashboard, the fourth since late August. No other details about the case have been released.

The North Carolina Department of Health dashboard shows 11 deaths for Dare County since the pandemic began last year, not 19, because deaths are reported to the state office of vital records based on where the patient died, said Dare Health Director Sheila Davies.

“Many patients who are diagnosed with COVID, who live in Dare County and require hospitalization are transferred to hospitals outside of Dare County for a higher level of care,” Davies said. “If they die in another county we get notified by the hospital of their death but the death is filed/recorded by the county the patient was in at time of death.” This is also the case if someone dies at a hospital in Virginia.

The county has seen 5,403 COVID-19 cases since testing began last March, with 117 cases currently active among county residents. Fifteen county residents are hospitalized. Among non-residents, there have been 1,821 positive cases since last March, with one currently hospitalized.

Until this August, Dare County had not seen any COVID-19 deaths since April.

The health department reported 36 new cases on Sept. 21, seven of those being breakthrough cases among vaccinated individuals.
