Ayers stepping down as Manteo town manager in December

Manteo Town Manager James Ayers announced Tuesday that he will stepping down in December.

According to a press release, Ayers provided a 60-day notice of his departure to the Board of Commissioners in accordance with his employment agreement.

“I am grateful to the Board of Commissioners and the people of Manteo for the opportunity to serve the local community,” Ayers said. “It has been an honor to work alongside the many dedicated town staff members, community volunteers, and elected and appointed officials here in Manteo.”

The Manteo Board of Commissioners thanked Ayers for his “hard work and dedicated service to the Town of Manteo.”

Prior to his hire in January 2019 by the Town of Manteo, Ayers previously served as General Services Director for the City of Asheville, where he was also Interim Human Resources Director.

He was employed previously by the Town of Bluffton where he held a number of positions including Assistant Town Manager and Director of Engineering & Public Works. Before that, Ayers worked in the private sector for two decades primarily in real estate development and construction management.

The board said they will consider their options in filling the position, and an announcement will be provided at a future date.
