Before ‘Elf on the Shelf’ arrives, it’s ‘Deer under the Pier’ time on the Outer Banks

When did a fishing pier on the Outer Banks become a deer stand? It did today!

Monday afternoon a young buck decided to take a swim in the Atlantic Ocean, and was spotted swimming towards shore from near the end of Rodanthe Pier.

The deer apparently wasn’t bothered by the rain from a passing cold front this afternoon, and water temperatures in the low 60s along Hatteras Island.

Maybe he heard from Capt. Marty that the fishing was pretty good over the weekend and wanted to see for himself. Or he was trying to inspect the end that got separated from the rest of the pier by the nor’easter earlier this month.

Whitetail deer taking a swim around here is not as unusual as you may think, as they’ve been spotted by charter boat captains in the past crossing Oregon Inlet.
