Vehicle stop in Manteo leads to drug arrest - OBX Today

On September 6, 2024, at approximately 7:15 a.m., deputies from the B-District responded to a report of a careless and reckless driver near the Heart of Manteo on Hwy 64. Upon arrival, deputies discovered the vehicle stationary at the red light at Bowsertown and Hwy 64, with the driver appearing to be asleep behind the wheel.

Deputies were able to awaken the driver and secure the vehicle. During the subsequent search, they recovered and seized quantities of Fentanyl and Suboxone.

Jonathan A. Layton, 31, of Kill Devil Hills, NC, was arrested and charged with the following:

Felony Possession of a Schedule I Controlled Substance

Misdemeanor Driving While Impaired

Misdemeanor Possession of a Schedule III Controlled Substance

Misdemeanor Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

Layton was given a $15,000 secured bond.

Nags Head Police Department Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) assisted with this incident. A DRE is a police officer specially trained in recognizing specific symptoms and behaviors that are caused by drugs.
